Steel vs. nylon rollers
Most builder-grade doors come with basic steel rollers that have open bearings. They're loud, and they wear out and rust over time, especially in damp New England garages. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers run almost silently, don't need constant lubrication and last much longer. If there's a bedroom or living space over your garage, it's one of the best upgrades you can make.
How we replace garage door rollers
- Inspect the tracks, hinges and cables along with the rollers
- Replace rollers one section at a time. The bottom brackets connect to the lift cables and are under tension, so we handle those safely
- Replace cracked hinges and straighten or adjust the tracks as needed
- Lubricate hinges and bearings, then test balance and the opener's force settings
Safety note: The bottom roller brackets are attached to the lift cables and are under high spring tension. Don't remove them yourself.
